Modern Classics

I just connected with an old friend who complained that there isn't any new music worth listening to these days... or if there is, he can't find it. My biggest problem is keeping up with all of the cool music these days and I always have my ear to the ground for new sounds.

To make it a little easier for him, I was inspired to make this playlist of "Modern Classics," which I define as relatively new music that has proven it's staying power. Everything on this list is roughly 10 years old (1998-200) and nearly all of these artists are actively creating today.   read more »

THREE HEAVIES ON THE RADAR

1. New Power Trio from Fantasyland

News just slipped out that Josh Homme (front man for Boeger favorite Queens of the Stone Age), John Paul Jones (yes, THAT John Paul Jones), and Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) are recording in Los Angeles. Mini Tour with Danny Barnes

Barnes came to the Bay Area for a string of shows and I had the pleasure of carting him around to gigs in Larkspur, Santa Cruz, and Petaluma. He opened for The Waybacks at these engagements which was great for us... he'd play, Waybacks would start... he'd sit in for a couple of numbers... then we'd blaze home for early bedtime. Still, it makes me so glad I never chose the touring life.   read more »

Get Heart On for $3.99

Don't know if this is intentional or not, but if you have any interest in mojave desert lo-fi glam rock sex-drenched boogiewoogie music, this is a deal you can't pass up!

I just found the brand new Eagles of Death Metal album "Heart On" at Amazon Downloads for only $3.99. Is this a mistake? The files are fairly hi-res (variable bit rate ranging 238 > 287 kbps) and more importantly, the music rocks like nobody's business. In a guilty pleasure, rev up your El Camino kind of way. The production here is more varied than prior 2 records (less raw) and even has -- don't want to call it a ballad -- let's just call it a mellow tune.
