The Crimson Pirate
Submitted by jack on June 4, 2007 - 2:16pm.This 1950's technicolor sendup of swashbucklers is very fun. We had a 6-year-old visiting us, and he's so inundated w/ modern entertainment we didn't think anything could please him, but we were up to the challenge. read more »
Layer Cake
Submitted by jack on June 4, 2007 - 2:10pm.Nothing new here, but it's very well done. Daniel Craig is simply awesome. Intrigued throughout.
High and Low
Submitted by jack on June 4, 2007 - 2:09pm.I won't get into what most film buffs will say, which is Kurosawa is THE master of film, including this one. It's slow and methodical and long.... but I loved it! Every square inch of scene is completely perfect. read more »
The Prestige versus The Illusionist
Submitted by jack on May 20, 2007 - 11:20am.The Prestige just didn't live up to my high expectations. Don't mean to sound like a dork but the characters (and their period hairstyles) were just totally unconvincing, and mostly unlikeable. We liked The Illusionist better. read more »
Jesus Camp
Submitted by jack on May 20, 2007 - 11:06am.The amazing thing about this documentary is how the filmmakers were allowed to make it! Watch this and also "Mystic Iran" and please tell me the fundamental difference. Frightening, indeed.
The Damned Don't Cry
Submitted by jack on May 20, 2007 - 11:04am.Noir flick w/ Joan Crawford. Everything about her is great, everything else is forgettable.
Our Hospitality
Submitted by jack on February 10, 2007 - 9:41am.We just can't get enough of Buster Keaton! Much to the boys' delight, this 1923 film included extended train scenes (a predecessor to The General). Buster has inherited an "estate" in the country and also a long-running tradition in feud. read more »
Pickup on South Street
Submitted by jack on February 10, 2007 - 9:35am.We enjoyed this movie more than the rating indicates... but compared to a gem like The Asphalt Jungle, this is less impressive by a long shot. The communist hysteria seems misplaced in this noir piece, but every square inch is beautiful to look at, and we finally solved the mystery of where the Johnny Dangerously character came from. read more »
The Iron Giant
Submitted by jack on February 10, 2007 - 9:31am.This movie amazes. Probably our favorite animated flick that's been made in decades. We especially like Dean, who is voiced by Harry Conick, Jr. Interesting to know this project was produced by Pete Townshend! We should also alert that there is some intense gunplay at the very end so this isn't for tiny tots. read more »
Johnny Cash - Riding The Rails
Submitted by jack on January 27, 2007 - 7:28pm.In 1974, the Man in Black made some television specials. Our boys (parents included) love this video of Johnny Cash taking us through the history of trains in America. He is always on the scene with his guitar, narrating and singing songs like "The City of New Orleans", "Casey Jones", and many more. read more »
