The Upsetters - Super Ape

As the album cover says... "DUB IT UP BLACKER THAN DREAD." Andrew loaned us this vocal/dub record from the classic era of Lee "Scratch" Perry and The Ark. Hiss never sounds so beautiful as he carefully crafts and builds sounds out of... who knows? You might be listening to some kind of percussive echo and then, when the song's about to end, it opens up and you realize it's been a saxaphone all along. This is crazy, beautiful stuff. My 5-year-old noticed that a lot of the dub sounds remind him of the latest Beck, which he listens to dutifully. Yep, it came from somewhere!! Right from Super Ape, to be more exact.
